Nick Gornall. First year as a Professional Bodyboarder.
By Luke Gornall
After years of early mornings, skipping school for waves, afternoon surfs, all day sessions, hours spent on planes, days spent in airports, months spent away from home, thousands of kilometers paddled, what would feel like a lifetime spent in front of the TV watching his mentors trying to perfect his surfing. Nick has finally made the leap and is now a professional Bodyboarder. This is how his first Year has gone and even though I knew he had the talent I didn't know he would explode onto the scene like this.
I am Luke Gornall Brother of Nick Gornall and I have taken it upon myself to lift Nick's Profile in the bodyboarding world. I had a few ideas to get his name out there and so far it is working. I am amazed at how things have worked, but once you get a good product selling it is the easy part.
Having the support of his sponsors Morey Bodyboards, Agent Eighteen Wetsuits, Plastic People clothing, Surf FX and Nutrition Warehouse, it all really started with Nicks Signing as a professional to the world's oldest and largest Bodyboarding company Morey Bodyboards. This was in November of 2010 and this is when life as a professional Bodyboarder started for Nick. This is how it has gone down so far.
December 2010. Off to a great start with a 6 Page interview in Le Boogie shots courtesy of Mickey Edwards, a Double in Movement and a shot in Riptide. This month also saw Nick into the 21st century with a facebook group started, a website loaded up ( www.nickgornall.com ), all his older edits loaded to multiple video screening websites and even his own profile on Youriding an online bodyboarding game ( www.youriding.com ).
January 2011. Nick knew he had to have a big year, prove his worth to his sponsors and it started with Morey announcing that Nick was going to get his own Pro Model Board. So he went on a mission to get as much footage in a couple of weeks to make an edit to tell the world about his board release. He also started to work on board designs and logo ideas. This month also saw the start of his epic adventure for Riptide Magazine to Chicago, Puerto Rico, Panama, Bahamas and New York.
February 2011. Nick continues his trip with Riptide wining a completion in Barbados on the way. Finalizing his board and logo designs and Woodrow TV release his Morey Pro model edit and it goes crazy popping up on websites all over the world.
March 2011. The trip is now over and Nick is no stop talking about the waves he scored. Nick arrived home to his first run of Nick Gornall Pro Model boards and with Surf FX as a new sponsor he took his new boards and headed down south to collect some footage for an edit to celebrate. After Months of chatting to Nick about Strength and conditioning he is really interested and starts a new program to increase his fitness and overall strength so he can start tackling some bigger waves.
April 2011. This month sees the release of the Caribbean trip in Riptide with 4 surfing shots and a loud of lifestyle shots covering the first half of the trip. With some old posters and DVDs a promotion was started at Surf FX buy anything booging get free Nick Gornall posters and DVDs. Back on Plane Chasing a swell with Rod Owen and Movement through Soma.
May 2011. Only home from Soma for a couple of days then a swell down the coast hits, so off he goes again on a day trip Collecting footage to start the new Agent Eighteen edit. James Woodrow from Woodrow TV calls the Surf FX edit is ready and released. Starts popping up on all the Australian Websites even on no English speaking sites. Nick gets the call Massive swell hitting his favorite outer Bombie this is the one he has been waiting for. Joined up with filmier Mitch Payne and Nick ended scoring some of the biggest and hollowest waves of his life. With new confidence in his fitness levels Nick scored gathered enough footage in 1 day for the Agent edit.
June 2011. Good start to the month, Morey double Page add in the new Movement with a shot from the Caribbean trip. Riptide also released another issue, this being the second half of the Caribbean trip and a couple of surfing and a heap of lifestyle shots. Movement trip to South Australia were they scored great waves and amazing footage. 6000 views in 2 days the release of the Agent Eighteen edit 1.5 Days thanks to Mitch Payne and Liam Obrien the best start to an edit so far.
July 2011. Great new sponsor onboard, Nutrition Warehouse have joined the party helping Nick with all his supplement needs and training advice. Kane Overall filmed and edited Nicks South Australia trip, the clip was released everywhere and had the same if not more traffic as the last edit. In a week it had over 15 000 views with the edit showing all Nicks sponsors.
August 2011. When it rains it pours, this month for Nick it flooded front covers all over the place.
Riptide 40 years of bodyboarding issue front cover, Page, Double Morey add, 1 Interview, I full page
Shot, 1 ½ page shot, write up on his new pro model and a completion to win a Nick Gornall setup
(Morey pro model board, Agent eighteen wetsuit, Plastic People Clothing). Then Le boogie came out
double page Morey spread, a few smaller shots and a article on how Nick's Morey pro model logo came
about. Buy now I was thinking it can't get much better than this Bang front cover of the new design
Movement, a full storey in Nicks words about his trip and shots everywhere (to many to count).
What a great start to life as a Pro bodyboarder and after spending my whole life surfing with Nick from the day he got his first board to now, just having graced the cover of 2 magazines in the same month. With a mad fixation on style and smoothness Nick's riding has been taken to the next level this year through hard work and dedication. Gone are the days of surfing and that's it. Nick now has a strict strength and conditioning and diet program to keep him at this high level. So all those that are watching his edits and seeing his shots remember hard work pays off. Keep a look out for Nick's Pro Model board release in September and an update on the rest of the year. Thanks
